Beals got her acting start when she landed a small part in My Bodyguard in 1980. She co-starred with Chris Makepeace, Adam Baldwin, Matt Dillon, and Joan Cusack. A few years later in 1983, she landed her signature role as Alex Owens who worked as welder by day and a club dancer at night in Flashdance. She co-starred with Michael Nouri, Lilia Skala, Kyle T. Heffner, Sunny Johnson, and Belinda Bauer.

Two years after Flashdance, Beals starred in an episode of Faerie Tale Theatre: Cinderella co-starring John Achorn, Jane Alden, Matthew Broderick and Eve Arden; and The Bride co-starring Sting, Anthony Higgins, David Rappaport, Geraldine Page, Clancy Brown, and Cary Elwes (1985).

Another two years would pass before Beals would star in The Gamble co-starring Matthew Modine, Faye Dunaway, Corinne Clery, Ian Bannen, and Darci Adams (1988); Vampire's Kiss co-starring Nicolas Cage, Maria Conchita Alonso, Elizabeth Ashley, Bob Lujan, Kasi Lemmons, Amy Stiller, Jessica Lundy, and Jodie Markell (1988); and Split Decisions co-starring Gene Hackman, Craig Sheffer, Eddie Velez, Jeff Fahey, Victor Campos, and John McLiam (1988).

Jennifer played the role of Zoe for 6 episodes, leaving the show in 2010.
