Jaclyn took a similar track as Farrah Fawcett starting in commercials and even some of the same TV shows and eventually became a "Breck girl" for Breck Shampoo in 1971 and later for Wella Balsam shampoo. However, Jaclyn got her acting start in an uncredited appearance in the film "Goodbye, Columbus" in 1969. Smith co-starred with Richard Benjamin, Ali MacGraw and Jack Klugman. She then got a role that same year in "The Adventurers" co-starring Charles Aznavour, Alan Badel, Candice Bergen, Olivia de Havilland, and Ernest Borgnine. In 1970, Jaclyn appeared in her first TV series "The Partridge Family" starring Shirley Jones, David Cassidy, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Suzanne Crough, Brian Forster, and Dave Madden.

Two years later Jaclyn would star in the TV movie "Probe" co-starring Hugh O'Brian, Elke Sommer and Burgess Meredith (1972). She would go on to star in "Oh, Nurse!" co-starring Lori Saunders, Heather Young and Judy Pace (1972); "Bootleggers" co-starring Paul Koslo, Dennis Fimple and Slim Pickens (1974); "Fools, Females and Fun" co-starring Leonard Beatty, Brooke Bundy, Jack Cassidy, Sam Melville, Julie Newmar, and Barbara Rush (1974); "McCloud" starring Dennis Weaver, J.D. In 1976 Jaclyn begain playing the role of Kelly Garrett on the TV show "Charlie's Angels" as a sexy detective working for the Charles Townsend Agency. She co-starred with Kate Jackson (Sabrina Duncan), Farrah Fawcett (Jill Munroe), David Doyle (John Bosley), the unseen John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie Townsend, and the eventual replacement angels Cheryl Ladd (Kris Munroe), Shelley Hack (Tiffany Welles), and Tanya Roberts (Julie Rogers). Jaclyn stuck with her role for the entire run of the show until 1981.

During her run on "Charlie's Angels", Jaclyn starred in "The Whiz Kid and the Carnival Caper" co-starring Eric Shea, Clay O'Brien, Kim Richards, and Jaclyn Smith (1976); "The San Pedro Beach Bums" co-starring Christopher Murney, Stuart Pankin and John Mark Robinson (1977); "The Love Boat" starring Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Fred Grandy, Lauren Tewes, and Jill Whelan (1977); she got a lead role in "Escape from Bogen County" co-starring Mitch Ryan, Pat Hingle and Henry Gibson (1977); another lead in "The Users" co-starring Tony Curtis, Joan Fontaine, John Forsythe, Red Buttons, George Hamilton, Michelle Phillips, John Pleshette, and Darren McGavin (1978); and "Nightkill" co-starring Robert Mitchum, James Franciscus, Mike Connors, and Sybil Danning (1980).

In 1985, Jaclyn created her own line of women's clothing to be sold exclusively by Kmart. This would mark Smith's entrance into the world of business.

In the new millennium Jaclyn starred in "Navigating the Heart" co-starring Tim Matheson, Tantoo Cardinal, Lynda Boyd, and David Andrews (2000); and "Becker" co-starring Ted Danson, Hattie Winston, Shawnee Smith, Terry Farrell, and Nancy Travis (2 episodes, 2000-2001).
In 2002 Jaclyn began playing the role of Vanessa Cavanaugh in the TV series "The District" co-starring Craig T. Nelson, Roger Aaron Brown, Elizabeth Marvel, and Sean Patrick Thomas. She starred in fourteen episodes until the show ended in 2004. During her run on this show, Smith also made an uncredited appearance as Kelly Garrett in "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" co-starring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Bernie Mac (2003);

In 2004, Smith starred in two episodes of "Hope & Faith" starring Faith Ford, Kelly Ripa, Ted McGinley, and Megan Fox. The following year, Jaclyn starred in "Ordinary Miracles" co-starring Lyndsy Fonseca, C. Thomas Howell, Sarah Aldrich, Corbin Bernsen, Ina Barron, and Erik Eidem (2005).

After an absence from the entertainment scene, Jaclyn was selected to co-host the reality show "Shear Genius" in 2007 through 2008.

Recently Jaclyn starred in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" co-starring Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni, Richard Belzer, Tamara Tunie, and Diane Neal (2010) and a documentary on breast cancer survivors "1 a Minute" co-starring Olivia Newton-John, Melissa Etheridge, Lisa Ray, Morgan Brittany, and many others (2010). Jaclyn Smith as well as her "Charlie's Angel" co-star Kate Jackson are breast cancer survivors.
