MacLeod got his start in television starring in a couple of episodes of "The Walter Winchell File" in 1957 and 1958. After a few uncredited roles, he was cast in many different shows and films for the remainder of the decade such as "The Thin Man" (1958), "U.S. Marshal", "Compulsion" (1959) with Orsen Wells, "Pork Chop Hill" co-starring Gregory Peck, Rip Torn, George Peppard, and Robert Blake (1959), "World of Giants" (1959), and "Operation Petticoat" in 1959 with Cary Grant, Tony Curtis , Joan O'Brien, Dina Merrill, and Marion Ross of "Happy Days" fame.
In 1960 MacLeod starred in the film "Twelve Hours to Kill" with Barbara Eden and future "Mary Tyler Moore Show" co-star Ted Knight. That same year he also starred in "High Time" with Bing Crosby, Fabian, Tuesday Weld, and Yvonne Craig. He also appeared in shows such as "Lock Up", "Mr. Lucky", "Peter Gunn", "Dr. Kildare", and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" co-starring Mary Tyler Moore. From 1959-62 he also appeared in 5 episodes of "The Untouchables" starring Robert Stack.
From 1962-64, Gavin played the role of Joseph "Happy" Haines in the show "McHale's Navy" and then again in the film co-starring Ernest Borgnine, Joe Flynn, Tim Conway and the show guest starred on occasion, Ted Knight.
MacLeod guest starred on "The Munsters" (1964), "Rawhide" (1965), "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Perry Mason", and "My Favorite Martian". Also that same year Gavin starred in the films "The Sword of Ali Baba" and "McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force".
In 1966 Gavin starred in the films "Deathwatch" with Michael Forest and Leonard Nimoy, "Baby Makes Three", and "The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, Candice Bergen, and Mako. He also made TV show appearances such as "Combat!" with Vic Morrow (1967), "The Road West", "The Flying Nun" (1969), "Hawaii Five-O" (2 episodes, 1968-69), "The Big Valley" (3 episodes, 1967-69), "Hogan's Heroes" (1966-69), "Lancer" (1969), and "It Takes a Thief" with Robert Wagner and Fred Astaire (1968-70).

In 1970 MacLeod starred in the popular war film "Kelly's Heroes" with Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland, and Harry Dean Stanton. It was also that same year that he was cast as Murray Slaughter in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" co-starring Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper, Ed Asner, Ted Knight, Georgia Engel, Cloris Leachman, and Betty White. He played the role from 1970 to 1977 when the show ended. He also appeared on the spin-off show "Rhoda" starring Valerie Harper for Rhoda's wedding.

Immediately after "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", Gavin landed the role as Captain Merrill Stubing on "The Love Boat". He co-starred with Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Jill Whelan, Lauren Tewes, and Fred Grandy. His show ran for an incredible ten years until 1987 and featured many guest stars in the entertainment industry. A few years after the show ended, Gavin also starred in the TV movie "The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage" in 1990. Then eight years later in 1998, he appeared as a guest in an episode of new version of the series "Love Boat: The Next Wave".

During his run on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Love Boat", MacLeod also made other appearances such as "The Intruders" (1970), "Ransom for Alice!" (1977), "Charlie's Angels" as the captain of "The Loveboat" in the Angel special, and "Scruples" which was a mini-series co-starring Lindsay Wagner, Barry Bostwick, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Connie Stevens, and Robert Reed. In the late 1990's Gavin made some appearances on shows and movies such as "Murder, She Wrote" (1990), and "Burke's Law" (1994).

Gavin's appearances thinned in the new millennium he appeared in the films "Time Changer" with Hal Linden, Paul Rodriguez, Jennifer O'Neill, and D. David Morin (2002), and "The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry" (2008) with Jansen Panettiere, Robert Guillaume, and Mary Jean McAdams. He also made several TV appearances such as "Oz" (2000), "The King of Queens" (2 episodes, 2001-2002), "JAG" (2003), "Touched by an Angel" (2003), and "The Suite Life on Deck" (2009).
