Julie Harris who played the role of Lilimae Clements on Knots Landing

Julie Harris is known as the actress for having the most Tony wins and nominations in history.  She has been nominated 10 times and won 5 of those as well as receiving a special Tony award for lifetime achievement.  She was born December 2, 1925 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.  Her best known television role was on the nighttime drama "Knots Landing".  She played Lilimae Clements the mother of Valene Ewing.  She has also won 3 Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award.  She was also nominated for an Academy Award.

Julie began her television debut in 1948 in a series called "Actor's Studio".  She starred in 4 episodes through 1949.

In 1950 Julie performed in the Broadway adaptation of "The Member of the Wedding" and again in the big screen version two years later.

Julie was cast opposite James Dean in the 1955 film "East of Eden" and in the same year she appeared in the film "I am a Camera".  Other film credits include "The Truth About Women" (1957), "The Poacher's Daughter" (1958), and "The Heiress" and "The Power and the Glory"(TV 1961).  Continuing with "Requiem for a Heavyweight" (1962), "The Haunting" (1963), and "Hamlet" in 1964.  She then had a few TV appearances such as "The Holy Terror" (1965), "Rawhide" (1965), and "Laredo" (1965).

Her film credits continued with "Harper" (1966), "You're a Big Boy Now", "Reflections in a Golden Eye" (1967), and "Journey to Midnight".  She then had another string of TV show credits including "Run for Your Life" (1968), "Tarzan" (1967-68), "Daniel Boone", "Bonanza"
starring Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Pernell Roberts, and Dan Blocker; "The Big Valley", "Journey to the Unknown" (1969), "The Name of the Game" (1970), and "The Virginian" (1971).  She had a 9 episode run on "Thicker than Water" in 1973, along with "Medical Center", "Columbo", "Hawkins", and "The Evil Touch".

In 1974 she starred in the TV movie "The Greatest Gift" as Elizabeth Holvak which spawned the series "The Family Holvak" the following year of which she starred in 10 episodes.  She then appeared in a string of movies both on TV and the big screen such as "The Belle of Amherst" (1976), "Voyage of the Damned", "The Bell Jar", and "The Gift" both in 1979. 

It was in 1980 that Julie began playing the role of Lilimae Clements on the nighttime soap "Knots Landing" co-starring Ted Shackleford, Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee, Donna Mills, Kevin Dobson, Nicollette Sheridan, and William Devane.  "Knots Landing" was a spin-off of the nighttime drama "Dallas" and Julie appeared in the show regularly through 1987.

During Julie's time on "Knots Landing", she also appeared on various films and TV shows such as "Brontë" (1983), "Annihilator" (1986), "Family Ties" (1986), and "The Love Boat"
starring Gavin MacLeod, Lauren Tewes, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, Jill Whelan, and Ted Lange (1987).

After "Knots Landing" Julie starred in films and TV movies such as "Gorillas in the Mist" with Segourney Weaver, "To Good to be True" (1988), "Single Women Married Men" (1989), "Housesitter" (1992), "The Dark Half" (1993), "One Christmas" (1993), "Secrets" (1995), "Little Surprises" (1996), "Bad Manners" (1997), "Passage to Paradise" (1998), and "The First of May" (1999).  Despite having as stroke in 2001 Julie Harris continued to act in "The Golden Boys" (2008) and "The Lightkeepers" (2009).

Julie also starred in such Broadway hits such as "Macbeth", "A Shot in the Dark", and "The Glass Menagerie".

Julie Harris passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013.  She will be sorely missed an her achievements on stage and screen never forgotten.
