Dan Haggerty best known as Grizzly Adams

Actor Dan Haggerty is probably most memorable as the mountain man who had a grizzly bear as his best friend in the TV series The Life and Times of Gizzly Adams which aired back in the late 1970's.  Born in Hollywood in 1941 he settled right into the muscle beach California genre.

He broke into acting in 1959 appearing in the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color: Texas John Slaughter: Killers from Kansas.  He then fit right into the role of a muscle man in the movie Muscle Beach Party in 1964.  From there he appeared in such films as Easy Rider along side Peter Fonda and that let to other 'biker' roles in films such as Pink Angels and Chrome and Hot Leather in 1971 and Superchick in 1973.  He played other more serious roles in Bury Me An Angel, Hex, and When the North Wind Blows.  He then landed the lead role in the movie The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams in 1974.  A few years later this led to the development of the TV series of the same name that ran from 1977 to 1978 in which he starred along with Denver Pyle who played 'Mad Jack'. Then came other Grizzly Adams roles in Once Upon a Starry Night, Legend of the Wild (1981), and The Capture of Grizzly Adams in 1982.

For a time he actually did "almost" live the life of a mountain man in the Malibu canyons with his animals and lived making his own clothing, furniture, and food.

After the Grizzly Adams days, Dan starred in many TV movies in person as well as voice.  His TV Show credits include Charlie's Angels with Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, and Tanya Roberts (1981); and The Love Boat starring Gavin MacLeod
, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, and Ted Lange (1983).  His many movie credits include Ladies Night (1983), Abducted (1986), The Chilling (1989), Elves (1989), Macon County War (1990), Repo Jake (1990), Spirit of the Eagle (1991), The Magic Voyage (1992), Father Frost (1996), Grizzly Mountain (1997), Puss In Boots (1999), Motocross Kids (2004), The Book of Ruth: Journey of Faith (2009).

  6. I'm a big fan of Dan Haggerty and yes I would love to see him back as Grizzly Adams. I live in Maine where this legend, the real John Capen Adams learned the wild life skills needed. My friends call me Wilderness Will, and most of the wildlife here I am friends with. When your in the big timber of Maine, time stands still, nothing is as breath-taking, or as beautiful as being in God's creation as it was meant to be. 7. Saw Dan recently in Cathouse, a documentary about an American whorehouse. He'd been ordained as a minister & was there to marry a couple next day but was enjoying the party a bit too much for my liking if you get my drift. One of the hookers said she'd love to 'do' Grizzly Adams. Booooo - he was my childhood hero. It was like watching Santa standing on the roof & pissing down the chimney. He's Grizzly Adams for Christs sake, hero, wildman, bear whisperer - oh yeah, actor - forgot about that one!!!!!!!!
