He broke into acting in 1959 appearing in the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color: Texas John Slaughter: Killers from Kansas. He then fit right into the role of a muscle man in the movie Muscle Beach Party in 1964. From there he appeared in such films as Easy Rider along side Peter Fonda and that let to other 'biker' roles in films such as Pink Angels and Chrome and Hot Leather in 1971 and Superchick in 1973. He played other more serious roles in Bury Me An Angel, Hex, and When the North Wind Blows. He then landed the lead role in the movie The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams in 1974. A few years later this led to the development of the TV series of the same name that ran from 1977 to 1978 in which he starred along with Denver Pyle who played 'Mad Jack'. Then came other Grizzly Adams roles in Once Upon a Starry Night, Legend of the Wild (1981), and The Capture of Grizzly Adams in 1982.
